Grading and Standards in Band
Students will be assessed and graded based on their ability to perform the Colorado State Music Standards at grade level. Each of the following skills will be practiced and assessed throughout the school year.

Sixth grade students will be expected to:
- Perform music in unison and two parts accurately and expressively at a minimal level of 1.
- Perform music accurately and expressively at a minimal level of .5 at the first reading.
- Demonstrate major and minor scales.
- Create melodic and rhythmic patterns.
- Improvise call-and-response patterns.
- Identify rhythmic and melodic patterns in musical examples.
- Notate at level .5 using the appropriate clef for his or her instrument.
- Analyze a beginning level composition or performance using musical elements.
- Determine strengths and weaknesses in musical performances according to specific criteria.
- Describe music’s role in the human experience. Describe ways music is used and enjoyed in society.
Seventh grade students will be expected to:
- Perform music in three or more parts accurately and expressively at a minimal level of 1 to 2.
- Perform music accurately and expressively at the minimal difficulty level of 1 at the first reading.
- Demonstrate an understanding of modalities.
- Sequence four to eight measure of music melodically and rhythmically.
- Improvise short melodic phrases over accompaniment.
- Identify and demonstrate rhythms in multiple and changing meter signatures.
- Notate level 1 compositions using the appropriate clef for his or her instrument.
- Analyze musical elements in a level 1 composition or performance.
- Compare and contrast music performance and compositions using detailed vocabulary.
- Articulate and analyze individual experiences in music.
Eighth grade students will be expected to:
- Perform music in four or more parts accurately and expressively at a minimal level of 2 to 3.
- Perform music accurately and expressively at the minimal level of 1 to 2 at the first reading.
- Demonstrate contrasting modalities through performance.
- Create music using melodic and harmonic sequences.
- Arrange a simple existing composition.
- Improvise over simple harmonic progressions.
- Transcribe and demonstrate rhythms over multiple and changing meter signatures.
- Notate level 2 compositions.
- Identify musical elements in a level 2 composition or performance.
- Evaluate musical performances and compositions.
- Articulate music’s role and cultural tradition in American history and society.
